Im Gespräch mit Urban Cone!

Standard

For people who don’t know you, how qould you describe your music in three words?

Rasmus: In three words?

Yes!
Rasmus: Ehm… I would say…hm, difficult. Gosh, that’s a hard question. I would say dynamtic, unique, and mood changer. Yes mood changer! Actually two words but…

…Yeah., so for now it’s one.  And why did you decide to call yourself Urban Cone?

Rasmus: Actually, it started out as, just like it’s a cool name and then Tim, the guitarrist, he drew a pinecone and everything felt perfect. We had the name, we had the logo. I think we grew up in our name as well, because we all live in  a city, Stockholm, and Urban Cone is basically  a direct transelate from the swedish expression like urban kids. Stats Kotte in swedisch, like city cone. And then we decided to go for that name, and we like it. It started as a cool bandname,  five kids with a dream, let’s make a band, and we came up with this name and then grew on us. Yeah, that’s pretty much it.

Ok, and was it always clear to you, that you want to become musicians?

Rasmus: I have always wanted to do something with music, but I never knew what I wanted to do. Then I met Emil and we started to write music, because we write everything for Urban Cone, me and Emil. Then we met these other people and everything felt spot on. We found each other and we felt like this is what we want to do in our lives.

Emil: I think it’s very important to have, you know, that moment to know if you wanna do this, and we had that moment.

Rasmus: We had it. We had an anticipation. We saw the futue.

We read that you wrote your songs in one of your livingrooms, is that true?

Rasmus: Yes! We recorded the songs there.

Yes, so why did you decide to record it in a livingroom and not in a studio?

Emil: Pretty much because we didn’t had a studio, so we had to do it.

Rasmus: And we felt like we could do it. Yeah, we had that vision and we felt like this is the way we want to do it. So we did it that way.

You designed your album cover on your own, right?

Rasmus: Yes, it’s Jacob, the one who plays the piano, he’s doing all the art work. And Tim, the guitarrist, he drew the cover.

Ok, and what inspired you for your covers?

Rasmus: Jacob’s version of it is that on the singles, he makes like a version of a pinecone. So „We should go to France“ he made this pinecone like, how to say.. mosaic.

Emil: Very inspired by the french sreetartwork.

Rasmus: So he does like, his version on the single. On „Kings and Queens“ he did a chess play. Like a queen and and then a king, that’s how we call it all, but anyway. And then on „Searching the Silence“ he did something, I don’t know, actually you should ask him, but yeah, he made something out of the cone on the singles and on the albums . But on the EP’s we wanted to express something else, so we did these pictures.  There’s one picture of a girl smoking, the first EP „Our Youth“ and I think it’s  about the youth, about the teenage years. When you’re… kind of not listening to your parents, you’re exploring new things, such as smoking and everything. I mean like, every person in the world can reflect to that. Not listenig to your parents, do whatever you like…  And the second EP is that girl crying black tears. I guess it’s about feeling sad, feeling left outside. We wanted to describe something, you know  getting the message. Cause in the singles, it’s about one song, and different kinds of the cone, but on the EP’s we wanted people to get the message.

Is there anyone you’d like to record with?

Emil: We’ve done several, like features. But right now… a dream would be maybe Duft Punk.

Rasmus: Or Justice! I would say more Justice than Duft Punk.  Maybe do a feature with Justice, that would be cool.

Emil: Yeah.

You’re quite successful in Sweden. What is it like starting from scratch in Germany?

Emil: I think, we like it more to play here in Germany, because the people really listen to the music. When we play in Sweden it’s like, almost every time, it’s past midnight and everybody is so drunk. It’s a great party, but people here listen more to the music and we really like that. So it will be very interesting to see how the next album will go here.

Your Song “Freak” has achieved Gold Record status, how does it feel? Did you expect something like that?

Rasmus: Of course, it was a dream of ours, but, I mean, we were surprised to be honest. We didn’t expect gold. It was a surprise for us.

Emil: We were very happy. We were at this restaurant with our record label. They took us to dinner and they told us the news before dinner. It was a very good dinner.

Rasmus: It makes us hunger for more. We want platin – triple platin and we going to have it. Laughs.

What’s a German audience like compared to a Swedish audience?

Emil: Just what I told. They are not so drunk, than the Swedish audience.

Everybody is saying that the German audience is the best, because they really listen to the music.

Emil: Yeah, they are like that. That’s very nice.

We’ve heard your song “New York” at the VMA’s, what is it like hearing your song at the VMA’s?

Emil: That was very unreal. I don’t know it’s so strange to hea

Rasmus: Yeah at the VMA’s

Emil: … in Sweden and then hearing it on the biggest TV show in the world.

Rasmus: And right after Justin Timberlake performed and they were introducing Katy Perry and our New York song came. That was pretty surreal.

Do you have plans for the future?

Emil: We are going to the studio, in November, and recording our second album.

Rasmus: It’s going to be crazy.

Do you have a favourite album at the moment?

Emil: Ehm maybe…

You can recommend your own music or music from other artists.

Rasmus: I think you should listen to Urban Cone – Our Youth.

Thanks very much for the interview!
